Strength Training

The exercise program prescribed and taught by Personal Training Fitness Studio will promote all of the following health and fitness benefits:

  • Increased muscular strength and endurance……
  • Increased physical capacity...
  • Improved muscle tone and shape...
  • Increased bone strength...
  • Increased metabolic rate...
  • Improved aerobic capacity...
  • Increased flexibility...
  • Improved physical and mental appearance...

Exercise is not magic. Attaining these positive changes requires hard work, discipline and patience. The rewards are directly proportionate to the effort invested!

Personal Training Fitness Studio wants to insure that you receive the most effective and safe workout. In order to do that, it is necessary for you to have a basic understanding of the most important concepts and principles to obtain maximum benefit from your new exercise program. Please read this short summary and consult our staff with any questions.

The ultimate goal of each individual workout is to cause a deep level of fatigue, as a result of work placed on the muscle, through proper methods of strength training. For example, at the beginning of any strength training workout your overall ability to perform is high and your effort is low. At the end of that particular workout, your ability to perform is very low (fatigue), but your effort is high (intensity). Your body, at this stage, will consume higher amounts of energy (calories) to support this level of demand. Each strength training exercise, if properly performed, will burn large quantities of excess energy (fat). Coupled with a proper diet and extra curricular activities (aerobics), the body will use more energy (calories) throughout each day.

When a muscle is subjected to this type of intense work (weight training), resulting in a deep level of fatigue, the body responds by adapting and overcompensating. The body produces this increased response over a period several days during what is called the recovery or recuperation period. During this time the muscle demands a higher energy level to perform daily functions, while still compensating for fatigued muscles. The fatigued muscle’s experiences as a result of an exercise, stimulates muscular improvement, as well as, an increased use of excess energy.

With each pound of muscle that the body adds, there is an estimated increase in metabolism of 50-100 calories per day (Dr. Elsworth Buskirk, Penn State University 1990, Super Slow Systems {Ken Hutchins, director}). If you add five pounds of muscle, your metabolism may increase by 250-500 calories. These are calories burned, regardless of activity level, to support the new muscle being created.

To provide the greatest amount of stimulus for muscular improvement and energy consumption, you must continue to perform an exercise to the point where movement is no longer possible, despite your best effort to continue (momentary muscular failure). It is imperative that you continue to move the resistance with 100% effort, even though no movement may be occurring. This is the point where the greatest amount of stimulus will occur. It is important that your efforts during these exercises are performed with good form and proper breathing techniques. Personal Training Fitness Studio, with certified trainers who hold degrees in Exercise Science, will bring this type of expertise to each of your workouts.

The real objective of each exercise program is to maximize muscle use, stimulate an increased use of excess energy, and provide the safest means possible to accomplish this. Weight lifting is the method used to induce these reactions. Performing in a clinically controlled environment is the most beneficial way to effectively reach all of your fitness goals.
